Check bows, string, arrows, and equipment and accessaries for rust, dents, bends, broken or missing pieces, wear, cracks, fraying, and make sure the screws are not loose. Don't forget to check your releases, and be sure to wax your string! Rub a cotton ball over your limbs to check for cracks. PMCS is very important on bows, cars, trucks, 4wheelers, and hunting equipment. If you are not sure how to do it, go by the owners manual if your equipment comes with one.

I Think I Will Chill And Shoot The Dxt For A Few Years.

I like the Dxt alot, I think I will shoot it for a few years before upgrading. Its a good bow, and I am going to relax a bit on the newest and greatest thing that comes out, and just keep enjoying the Dxt for a long time. Every year new bows come out, lighter, smoother, faster, etc. My last bow that I owned and shot for a long time, was a Bear Black Mag, back in the early 1980's. The Dxt, is like a super sonic jet compared to the Bear Black Mag. Well, the new bows they come out with every year, are only slightly better than the Dxt, so, therefore, why do I need a new bow? I don't. I like the new bows for this year, but, like I said, they are only slightly better. So, for a few years, I will stick with the Dxt.

Next 10 Days Perfect For Outdoor Bow Target Shooting

I had fun today, and for the next 10 days it will be nice and warm, 55 to 66 downhere in Alabama, outdoor target practicing and getting that sight and myself in check . after I get more consistant, I will re adjust my sights, for now, they are close, I am a little bit out of practice due to staying inside this winter due to the cold temps. Church was so great today, I went to Daystar Church of God. Jerry Lawson is the preacher , and a great vessel for God to fill and use.

Did Some Scouting And Set Up

The season opens March 15th here so I went to go do some scouting and set up a couple blinds. This year, I can only hunt one of the farms I've been privileged to hunt these last ten years. The other farm cannot allow anyone but employees and family at this time. Trust me it's complicated and no one is mad at me. I am certainly bummed. So this year, I am concentrating all my efforts on one farm.

I got there and glassed the field for birds. Yep there's three. I put the long lens on the camera and snapped a couple photos. Sorry they are grainy but this was 400 yards and I didn't want to spook them.

Here you can see the one on the left's beard better.

I watched and waited from a safe distance and this dude strolled out.

Then I looked over at one of the blinds we put up earlier. We ARE NOT feeding these birds here. They just were there. This field is typically an afternoon strut zone. Birds enter it from all sides. The trick is to get in that blind before the birds enter the field. It's definitely not a sure thing even then. Thank the Lord they are even there! I'm gonna be looking out for these dudes.

Rhinehart 3D Targets

I just ordered a couple of Rinehart targets. The #415 (backyard series) Turkey and the Small Bear (competition target). If they are as good as the 18-1 target, I will be very pleased. Anyone here ever use these targets?

Season's Coming

Turkey season here is a little over a month away now, and I need to start preparing. Keep in mind this will be my first time hunting turkey, so pardon the newbie questions . Having almost no experience in turkey hunting, and now looking at calls, I'm a little confused. What kind of calls should I be looking for? With this being my first year, I don't really want to make a huge investment in calls (or anything else turkey related for that matter). What are one or two easy to use calls that are considered must-haves to have a decent chance to get a shot at a bird?

My next question deals with shotgun shells. I plan on using my Mossberg 535 (3.5 inch chamber). What shot sizes should I be looking at, or is it just a matter of patterning different sizes with my gun? I was planning on using 3 inch shells, or is it recommendable to step up to 3.5 inch shells for the extra wallop (at both ends, I presume) and extra pellets, providing they shoot well? Any certain brands you guys prefer over others? I know I will need to pattern my gun with different shells before I hit the woods. I'm hoping to find some good ammo for close to $10/box. What should I be looking for when I pattern?

I also have some questions about my gun. My 535's barrel has a single bead. Should I consider getting aftermarket clamp-on fiber optic sights, or are they just something nice to have? Also, I have a stock full choke that I can use. What are your opinions on extended, ported choke tubes designed for turkey hunting with super tight constrictions?

My last question involves decoys. Are they important enough to plop down the extra cash, or can I live without one?

I'm sure I'll have more questions later, but I really appreciate the help.

Thanks again

Placed My Order

I stopped by J's Archery in Antigo this evening after work a placed my order for an all black Z7. Not sure on a couple other accessories yet, but I also ordered a black T5 Quiver and a DownForce rest.

I'm still in awe of how amazing the Z7 is. The grip is much smaller than I anticipated, which is a plus. The first time I shot it I was really shocked. The draw cycle really surprised me. It is very, very smooth, but the 80% let-off is a change (my Switchback is 65%). I couldn't believe dead the bow is on release. With nothing on it, it is quieter and has less vibration than my Switchback does all set up.

I'm getting a call tomorrow with the final price for ordering a black bow (we agreed it will probably be $50) and an approximate lead time. I'm pretty excited

Youth Sportsman Of The Year

Sorry to sound like a broken record here guys, but allow a proud pappa to brag. Again.

This past Saturday was the annual Indiana Bowhunters Association (IBA) awards banquet; my family attended as usual. MR James is always there, and there's always a celebrity speaker, good food, contests, siminars, auctions, lots of fun.

The highlight of the evening came just after supper when the awards ceremony began. I nominated my son Case a few months ago and didn't really think anything more about it. Much. Anyway, shortly after we arrived Saturday morning on of the board members pulled me aside and told me that Case was to be honored this year as the Youth Sportsman of the Year. Well, I can tell you it was difficult for me to keep quiet about it and to hold in my emotions.

Anyway, they put his name and picture up on the big screen and in front of several hundred attendees - Hoosier bowhunters from all over the state and some from out of state - my boy was honored and awarded a very nice plaque, which now graces our living room.

Gotta tell ya boys, it gets a poppa right in the ticker.
