Sort of a bummer for the hunter, but I think the State did the right thing. The man was open and honest about the mistake. Nobody needs to throw the book at him. I'd say, let him pay "cost" for the damages.

Well lets see. No hump, same color as the local black bears which were in season and never before seen in the area. How on earth is someone going to check the claw length before shooting a bear. The only visible means of id would have been the longer guard hairs. This guy made no effort to hide the kill and only after a close inspection from only a few feet could it be determined that it was a Grizz and it is possible that they could throw the book at him.

Man that is a tough call.
If God had a refrigerator would your picture be on it.
Remember the Ark was built by amateurs, the titanic by professionals.

I can't see throwing the book at him either.

To I.D. a grizz that wasn't in very good condition with no hump and not ever seen in the area would be a tough task especially if you're in an area with color variations of black bears. Bears are one of the toughest animals to size and sex. And if you have one that looks like a large male in front of you (thinking it was the right species) while hunting it's a no brainer bear. He's going home with you.
