Does anyone know how you can tell if it is safe to shoot steel shot through a certain shotgun?

If the Barrel is approved it should say on the barrel. If it does not say so then I would be very leary of shooting steel shot out of it. None of the older shotguns are approved for steel and the barrel can be ruined by using steel or any of the other nonlead shot.
