Bruce a serious question. I notice in your pics that the cow elk has the bright white rump patch while the smaller one has a more orange/brown patch. Is that normal in a calf?
If God had a refrigerator would your picture be on it.

I'm not an expert by any means....a calf will gen be more one color...but color phases depend on diffrent animals.
I ve seen elk that go from light tan to almost black (on their body') and light colored necks to almost black as well.

its pretty much animal by animal. as far as I know.
