Silver I own a Win Model 70 post 64 270. I have had it for many years and for a long time it has served me well as a combo deer and varmint rifle. I don't remember how many deer and groundhogs me and that rifle has shot but it is many. In the past couple of years I have kinda set the 270 aside for a rest and taken up a 7mm mag custom job that my father-in-law gave me. It does very well also on deer and it was the rifle I carted to CO in Elkatraz III. I too have a special fondness for the 270 round and plan on keeping it around for a while.

I have 270 Sav 111 pkg gun I never use. I got it three yrs ago off a guy in Bayfield I worked with for a steal of a price. Sighted it in, cleaned it, never shot it again. I even bought a case of 130 gr BTSP ammo for it two yrs ago.

To fight the 270 'fever' I took my 7mm Rem Mag out today and wiped it off and shouldered it some. I kilt my mulie with it last yr so thats what Ill hunt with anyway. I'm resistinggggg...

I want a 300Win Mag necked down to .277 no practical reason just want to combine my favorite calibers. If I ever get the money I will have one built. What is life without a few wants?

I have a T/C Encore .270 and love both the gun and the caliber. A .270 will do anything I need it too and has. :D

The reason that doesn't currently exist is the 7mm Rem Mag is essentially exactly that cartridge already. So Rem thought almost exactly the same thing, once upon a time.

I know that ballistics would be about the same but .284 isn't .277 and the 300WM case is about 3/8 inch longer than the 7mmMag but I don't know about capacity.

I believe you are mistaken. The 7 mag case is shorter but not that much.

Look at the 270 Weatherby magnum. This cartridge, fits your critia even closer.

Ok here it is from my Lyman reloading manual
The 300 Win Mag case is 2.620
The 7mm Rem Mag case is 2.500
There is a slight difference in the two cases. The 300 Win Mag has a slight bevel at the very rear of the case while the 7mm mag does not. Other than that nearly all the other dementions are very close to the same except for caliber of course.

I know I'm balisticaly challenged but is the .270 basically a knecked down .30-06 cartridge?

Yes spirithawk the 270 is a 30-06 necked down. The 270 cartridge is just a tad longer but a 30-06 reformed to 270 will fire just fine. I have resized a 30-06 by just running it in my 270 sizing die.
