I went out turkey hunting this morning but all was very quiet. I sat there about an hour and heard a twig snap. I looked in that direction and saw black thinking turkey I got a little excited. Then a leg count proved it was no turkey. It was a young bear. Not a real big one, I guessed it may have weighed 140 or 150 lbs. It was only about 35 - 40 yds away when it raised up on its hind legs and rubbed its back on a tree. It then climbed about 12 feet into another tree and stuck its nose in a hole three times and climbed down and finally ambled off. Man what a guy sees when he lets his camera at home. Would have made a great video clip.

I've had bobcat and coyote come in while I was turkey hunting but never a bear. The cat and coyote were definitely looking for the "bird". I've heard bears occasionally respond to predator calls.

Any suspicion he was attracted to calling or was it just purely coincidental?

Leo it had all the appearance of him just passing through. I had two decoys out and he looked that way several times. They were between me and him so they were even closer than I was. He paid little to no attention to the dekes. It is possible that the bear did respond to the calls but I did not observe any evidence of it. Eric and I saw his tracks the week before about 400 yds away so it was in its home range. I am still kicking myself that I chose not to take the camera that day.

This is the same mountainside where Eric and I encountered the mama and cub last year and this bear was about the size the cub would be this year. It could be the same bear.
