Last Tuesday the PA Game Comm. voted to start a new program to introduce more youth into the hunting ranks. Until now youths had to be 12 yrs. old to legally hunt in PA. This new program allows a youth under 12(no minimum age announced) to hunt for Squirrels, Woodchucks, & Spring Gobblers when accompanied by a Licensed Mentor at least 21 yrs. old. They can only have 1 sporting arm along to be used and the mentor must carry it at all times except when on stand. The mentor must keep the youth within arm's reach at all times. Next year deer will be added to the list of huntable game. Safety issues seem to be well thought out in the selection of game animals that are best hunted from a stationary stand or blind where clear instructions can be given. It will be interesting to see how this program develops. :)
