I am considering turning my dads 300 H&H into a long range gun and I know it's fully capable of the 1000 yard shot without question.
I have been looking at three scopes for this task, the Huskemaw 5-20 LR which is used on the Best of The West and has been proven and runs around $1200.00. My next choice is Leupold long range tactical with the varmint hunter reticle.
My ultimate choice would be Zeiss Diavari 6x24x72 with a z-plex reticle. The only fault with the Zeiss is having to get special rings because of the 34 mm tube and a lot more money.
All three are great scopes but come with a high price tag.
I would not even consider Bushnell,Nikon or Burris because one they don't have what I want or the quality.
What ever scope I choose it must have some sort of a mill dot reticle for both elevation and windage.
So if there are any long range shooters here, tell me what you use and why.

I have one of these

It's a very good scope for the money in my experience.

Here's a look through it accross the marsh in the back yard.

Nightforce NXS, 5.5x to 22x. Lifetime warrenty, great optical clarity. Noticed other long range shooters on the big guns using them. Now have 2, mounted on the LAR Grizzley .50 cal and on the AR 30 .338 Lapua Mag.We Use 18x the most at a 1000yds, it seems like 22x really enhances the mirage effect. Tough, well built scopes. http://nightforceopt...opes/index.html You will need to find a scope that will give you enough adjustment to get on target on that 1000 yd shot with your rifle, also, mounts with at least 10 to 15 m.o.a built in. It would be really sweet if you could find one to use and then decide if you liked the scope or, if you really wanted to get into that long range shooting before laying out that kind of cash

Leo that's a good reticle because it makes for quick adjustments without adjusting the scope for windage or elevation.
mudduck I know the nightforce has good optics but what it has in optics it lacks in the turret ajustment becuase after repeated use the turret becomes wobbly. I know this because a friend just had to replace his turrets.
mudd I have been shooting limited long range for sometime and want extend my range with better optics and a higher magnification scope. my son has two guns with leupold scopes and turrets and there is no guessing if you have ranged the yardage correctly and the leica 1200 does a good job, just dial the turret in, providing you don't need to adjust for wind and that's where the windage mill dots have the advantage.

I could make all kinds of suggestions to help you Robert, but last time I mentioned long range on here they wanted to burn my house down, take my children away, and ban me from the site. And now I'm no longer a bowhunter so if I gave you any LR scope info at all it would strike three for me and I'd lose my remaining few friends I have here. Good luck on sorting it out. LR is GREAT fun. Every time I look down range thru my mildot I see Osama Bin Laden's face Posted Image .

http://www.chuckhawk..._NXS_scopes.htm http://www.opticspla...iflescopes.html http://gunmart.net/a...compact_scopes/ http://snipercentral.com/nxs5522.phtml Some reviews of the Nightforce, got me wondering after you wrote about your friends troubles, although with the lifetime warranty, it should have been a non-issue.
