My family and I are looking to get our first dog after income tax time. My mom bred AKC registered rough collies when I was a boy. But my wife doesn't want a Collie. She is interested in a Basenji. But while we were at the local pet store and they had some puppies. They had an adorable beagle pup that She almost took home. What can you tell me about their behavior as a family dog and things to watch out for when keeping them as an indoor dog.

They are really good natured, love to go out chasing rabbits, and easy to work with. You will like them. Beagles are great. I had a basenji, and they are a big suck.

Beagles are normally very good with children and they tend to be calm and easy to please.

They always want company. The basenji doesn't like to be left alone at all. I liked mine. He wasn't an avid hunter like my beagle or terriers.  A beagle is very intelligent. You have to spend time with them just like a kid. They are willing to learn if you want to teach them. My beagle was great.

Love beagles. Got my first when I was fifteen to hunt bunnies.

Personally I wouldn't be looking at a pet store beagle. You just never know what their background contains and the price? Whew

A good beagle pup should run you $250 to $350 depending on the hunting background of the sire and dam.

Investigate reputable breeders in your area and tell them what you want in the dog.

Some are bred for show, some hunt and some family companions.

Good luck and post some pics when you get one.
